b or d – Which is Which

Our daughter has been having a bit of a mix-up with the letters b and d. When she reads the word “bed,” there’s an equal chance she’ll say “bed,” “beb,” “deb,” or “ded.” 😅 To help her out, we put together a few activities—and guess what? You can try them too! The lesson for the letter D is free (Scroll down to the very bottom of the activities to find the b or d – Which is Which? activities), and here are some screenshots of what we’ve been working on:

First, we write the letters b and d in the context of a word. Writing helps her brain get a better grasp of the letters.

Then, we play a bubble game—she pops the bubble with the correct starting letter when she sees an image.

Next, we do something similar in a puzzle form. She selects the letter b or d based on the image.

So, did it help her? Kinda! She’s definitely getting better, but it’s not perfect yet. If we skip reading for a few days, she tends to slip back a bit, and we have to go through the activities and read a few books to get her back on track.

The trick seems to be keeping up with regular reading so her brain gets used to recognizing the letters and their sounds. She’s only four and a half, so she’s got plenty of time. Her brain is still developing, and eventually, it’ll get the hang of it. Until then, she’ll keep practicing—and now she’s got this app to help her out!

You can download the 5 year old reading app from the App Store to help your kid figure out b and d too.
